Food4thought: Wearing Red

Wearing Red

It’s red like bright cherries, sweet and full
It’s red like cotton helping your vein coagulate
It’s red like a young girl, twirling her autumn dress
It’s red like plumerias, delicate yet fragrant

It’s red like a fountain washing our worst wounds
Beginning the healing process that must take place
It’s red like a doorpost telling angels,
“This one is mine.”
It’s red like the scream of a mother giving birth
As she delivers her dear daughter into this world
It’s red like the wrapping paper of that child’s gift
When she gently opens it
To her father’s delight
It’s red like a girl blushing when told she was missed
Especially if it’s by the one she’ll marry
Red like a crimson rose being reflected by water
Red like the sweet lips of the one I kiss
Red like sunlight filtered by rose curtains
It’s red like rubies, taking time and pressure to form
Emulating that heat which made them
With each radiant twinkle
It’s red like a shimmering star
Singing whether or not we listen
Red like a flickering ember, refusing to die
It’s red like a wildfire
Blown by the wind to consume all
It’s red like a knight’s wound
Recovering from glorious battle
Red like a flag heralding a king
It’s red like the ornaments of that king’s crown
Flowing with glory and power

It’s red like the longest wavelength of light
Comforting and deep
It’s red like a beating heart
Sustaining every moment of life

It’s red like the joy felt when two lovers
Killed by hatred
Return, because
It lives in them so vibrantly
That the darkness cannot win
