This is the fourth of a twelve-part series, "His Eyes." In this series, I'll be observing how our eyes seem to respond to the light and perhaps we may be able to get a better idea of how they should work. It is my hope that with His eyes, we will be able to see the path on which we run, thereby learning how to effectively run this race.
For those of you that still have blind eyes, ask for His eyes. For those of you that are believers, sometimes you forget to use the eyes He has graced you with. In a song by Brandon Heath, he earnestly requests that the Lord of lords would give him His eyes. So here we are, trying to break free of our blindness, but what does that look like?
A pastor of mine started out as a graffiti artist and small-time thief. So if you know his past and see him now, you would really wonder what changed him. The truth was that he fell in love with Christ; love made him a new person. He gained new eyes from the Lord and actually returned what he stole to the store that he took them from. As it turned out, when he walked in to return the merchandise, the store staff was discussing how to solve the increase in theft and since my pastor has formerly stolen from the store, he was able to tell them where all the weak points in their security was. He was radically transformed by the love of God and opened his eyes to the broken world, seeking to do His will.
Unfortunately, it doesn't always work that way. We constantly return to what we were, like a dog returns to his own vomit. For most of us, it's a constant struggle between what we want to look like and who we once were. I once heard this story of two wolves wrestling in a man's heart. One wolf was benevolent and kind while the other was destructive and malevolent. When asked which wolf would win, the man answered, "The one that I feed." Similarly, the person we become is the one we actively strive after. If we continually try to live a life with open eyes and an active heart, our eyes will fall in alignment with His as we carry out His plans.
So as a believer, it is not only in your power to see through the darkness, but also to do great things for the kingdom. So don't use the blind eyes of your past, but take for yourselves the eyes He gave you, fashioned with His hands and purchased for you through His blood. It is my exhortation to you, that though the world may be blind, you will receive your sight, take in the beauty of His world and move to be a person compelled by both the brokenness and beauty that you can see.
Thought: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hatred cannot drive out hatred, only love can do that." -Martin Luther King Jr.
